This week I began the second book of the Adventures of Sophie" series, "A Walk in the Woods". This book is based on the daily forest walk of Sophie and Jackson, Sophie as a young pup and Jackson blind, and feeble, near the end of his time on earth.

I had a much harder time coming up with a character of Jackson-I think the problem was capturing some of his enthusiasm for life which was evident when you were in his presence. After a few conversations with people who have known and loved Jackson I was able to get an image on paper that I liked and expresses his true energy.

Officially or not, winter is here in central Pennsylvania. As an outdoors person much of my day is spent layering clothes, going outside to either manage wood or hike, coming back inside and warming up only to start the process again in a short while. Today the temperature stayed in the upper twenties with a few scattered snow showers. Embracing, pretty and cold at the same time.

Today, my daughter at Penn State moved into her own apartment. Taking the advice of my chiropractor I hired 4 young men who with my friend, my daughter and I moved her massive mountain of clothes from one place to another with a fair amount of ease. She now lives 12 minutes away now and I get to avoid the angst of other parents packing their children away to school.

After I got home and did some yoga prop and art business I decided it would be relaxing to paint a bit even though it was late and I most likely would not get a chance to hike in the woods, do yoga, wash the pile of dishes in the sink or clean the downstairs floors which are in a sorry state.

I added two more circles to my painting. One is "Fall From Grace" and the other is yet to be named. "Fall From Grace" along "Before the Fall" are a vegan statement using the story of Adam and Eve and their diet before and after their hankering for apples caused a ruckus. Blame it on Eve she was the one collecting their food.

I finally got some money together so I could order some new stretchers and get started on a new painting. I have two ideas brewing but not sure which one I will take on first. So while I wait for the stretchers I immerse myself in the garden and the woods with it's wonderful perfect color balance. I'm not sure when I realized that nature's colors always compliment each other in a balanced way. The combination of red, yellow and orange of a poker flower is completely opposite its green leaves and stem.

After a day of toiling in the garden My dog Sophie and I made out way deep into the wood to pick huckleberries. This is the first year in many years that I am picking without my huckleberry picking friend and dog Jackson who passed on a few months ago. Picking huckleberries is much like painting in that I look for the color to come to the surface that is needed.
